General Information

The region is situated in the centre of the European part of Russia and is in the Central Federal District. Across its boundary in the north stand Kaluga and Tula Regions. In its southern neighbourhood is Kursk Region. Oryol Region borders the west on Bryansk Region and the east — on Lipetsk Region. The length of the region from the north to the south is over 150 km, the width exceeds 200 km.

In ancient times the territory of Oryol Region was settled by Balts and since the 9th century — by Vyatichi. Later on, Oryol Region became a constituent of Chernigovskaya Rus', after its decay the region was included in Verchovskiye Knyazhestva (small states), then it became part of Litovskoye Knyazhestvo and only in the 15th century did it pass to Moscow. In 1787, Oryol Guberniya (province) was instituted. Today's borders of the region have seen no changes since 1954.

There are 24 districts, 7 towns and 13 villages in the region. The regional centre is Oryol. It was founded in 1566 by Ivan the Terrible as an outpost aimed to protect the southern borders of the Russian State from the Crimean Tartars. The population of the city is 342,500 people. Oryol is favourably situated at the intersection of main railways and roads at a distance of 382 km from Moscow. It takes you 4.5 hours to get to Oryol from Moscow going by high-speed train.

Other significant towns are Livny (53,500) and Mtsensk (50,000). The national complement of the region is homogeneous: 96.6% according, to the last census, are Russians.

The climate is moderate-continental. The average year-long temperature is 5.5 degrees above zero. The average January temperature is 10 degrees below zero. The average July temperature is 19 degrees above zero. The annual total rainfall is 490-590 mm.

There are over 2,000 rivers and streams on the territory of the region with a total length of 9,100 km; however, there are no navigable rivers. The biggest rivers are the Oka, the Sosna and the Zusha.

Forests occupy 197,500 hectares (9% of the whole territory). The unique natural complex of Central Russia is presented by the National Park “Orlovskoye Poles'ye” located in the north-western part of Oryol Region (founded in 1994 with a total area of 84,205 hectares). On the territory of the park one can meet different types of trees, marshes, water fauna and meadows. In the park there're 220 species of vertebrates. 69 species of animals are considered to be rare. Among 130 sorts of plants 31 can not see anywhere in Oryol Region but in the park. The general ecological situation in Oryol region is relatively stable. Because there are no industrial “giants” and large mines in the area.

Sights

Tourists and guests to Oryol have an excellent opportunity to attend literary and historic museums. The I.S. Turgenev State Literary Museum, the Museum of Writers of Oryol, the L. Andreev House-Museum, the I.S. Bunin museum, the T.N. Granovski house-museum, the Museum of Regional Studies, the museum-diorama “The Oryol offensive operation of 1943” and the Museum of Arts. The tourists can go sightseeing around the city. They'll get an indelible impression from the trips offered by the tourist firms of Oryol.

There're 4 professional theatres: the Turgenev Oryol Academic Theatre, the Theatre for children and youth “Svobodnoye Prostranstvo”, the Puppet Theatre and the Municipal Theatre “Russki Stil’”. The theatre festival “Russian Classics” is held annually.

Folk art and traditions are closely connected with the history and the culture of Oryol. The unique folk crafts such as “orlovski spis”, pleshkovskaya toys and mtsenskiye laces are kept here.

Oryol Region has all the right conditions for making children and also adults youth and. All sanatoria and health camps are situated in the picturesque places of the Middle-Russian highland, where dense coniferous and mixed forests harmoniously combine with partially wooded steppes.

MUSEUMS

The regional local folklore museum
It was founded in 1897. It is the oldest museum of the region. Its funds contain the richest material about regional history from ancient times to the present day. The rare collection of the arms, awards and personal belongings from former noblemen's manors are exhibited in the museum exposition.

The I.S. Turgenev state literary museum
It was founded in 1918. The exposition consists of genuine exhibits belonging to the writer: manuscripts, documentary photographs, paintings and works of graphic art.

It was founded in 1957. The exposition shows the materials about the lives and creative work of A. N. Apukhtin, A. A. Fet, M. M. Prishvin, A. À. Novikov, B. K. Zaitsev.

The l. Andreev house — museum
It was opened in 1991. The exposition has a memorial character. It shows the unique documents and materials about the writer's life and creative work.

The I.A. Bunin museum
It was opened in 1991. Photos, autographs, documents from the personal archive of the Nobel prize winner I. A. Bunin tell us about the personality of the writer. The memorial cabinet with genuine things and furniture from his Paris Apartment is of the greatest value.

The T.N. Granovski house — museum
It was founded in 1957. The museum exposition tells us about the activity of Russian enlighteners of the mid of 19th century, such as T.N. Granovski, P.V. Kireevski, P.I. Yakushkin, D.I. Pisarev and Marko Vovchock.

The V.A. Rusanov house-museum
It was opened in 1982. The exposition materials tell the life of the well-known polar explorer, our fellow-townsman, V. A. Rusanov.

The Oryol offensive operation of 1943 diorama-museum
It was opened in 1983. The diorama artistic canvas reconstructs the battle episode of the breakthrough of the enemy's defenses near the village Maloye Izmailovo of the Novosil'ski district that took place on July 12, 1943 (The author is the People's Artist of USSR A.I. Kurnakov). In the diorama-museum the personal things of the marshals of the Soviet Union, arms, military uniform, battle awards and banners of military formations that took part in the Oryol and Kursk Battles are exhibited.

The museum of fine arts
It was opened in 1992. The museum exposition demonstrates paintings, drawings and sculptures of the Russian and foreign authors of 17th-20th centuries and also icons and samples of arts and crafts.

The I.S. Turgenev museum-estate “Spasskoye-Lutovinovo”
“Spasskoye-Lutovinovo” was Turgenev's favourite place, where he was eager to spend his time. The majority of his works were conceived and created here. On September 25, 1976 the memorial exposition was opened for visitors. Annually, on the last Saturday of June, the museum-estate “Spasskoye-Lutovinovo” conducts a traditional Turgenev holiday. The museum is open to visitors daily from 10.00 till 17.00: an excursion service for tourists is organised from 10.00 till 16.00 on a booking basis.

The national park “Orlovskoye poles'ye”
The National Park “Orlovskoye Poles’ye” is created to preserve and restore the unique nature of Central Russia and preserve and regenerate cultural heritage. “Orlovskoye Poles’ye” is a wonderful piece of Russian nature, that fascinates with its beauty in any season. The beauty of nature, the presence of unique objects, the deep connection between this land and the history of our state both ancient and modern, create the uniqueness and attractiveness that help “Orlovskoye Poles’ye” to take the special place among a number of similar parks in Russia. The N.S. Leskov house-museum
It was opened in 1974. Different portraits, books, photos and genuine things from the Petersburg department of the writer are collected in this museum.
